The Renter Guide

Find your next home with better questions.

Use this checklist to compare rentals, prepare for a tour, and keep the next steps clear.

01Before you shortlist 02Before your tour 03While you are there 04After the tour

01Before you shortlist

Compare the same floorplan, lease length, and move-in date. A property's starting rent may belong to a different layout.
Ask for the full monthly cost, including parking, pets, utilities, and any required recurring fees.
Check the commute and nearby essentials at the times you would actually use them.

02Before your tour

Request a date and time, then wait for the manager to confirm the appointment. A request alone is not a confirmed tour.
Confirm the meeting address, entry instructions, time zone, and contact person.
Bring your questions and room measurements. Ask whether the home you will see is the exact unit available or a model.

03While you are there

Look at storage, natural light, outlets, water pressure, and the condition of appliances. Ask before testing anything.
Listen for noise inside the home and in shared areas. Check the route from the entrance and parking to the unit.
Ask how maintenance requests work and which amenities are included. Note anything that needs clarification.

04After the tour

Write down what you liked and what did not work while the visit is fresh. Compare each home against the same priorities.
Ask the manager to confirm current availability, the proposed move-in date, and the application steps.
Keep listing details, messages, and documents together. Review the actual terms and ask about anything unclear before proceeding.
